I used engine paint and primer from the local auto parts store. As for the prep work...
I used a dremel and a wire wheel to get tuff stuff off, a high speed drill would work well too. Then some 500 grit and I worked up to 2000 wet sanding. I originally planned on polishing up the covers. Using some Mothers Metal polish and a powerball I was able to get a nice and consistant shine off the magnesium covers, but it never got to where I was satisified... hence... "Plan B"... I decided to paint them...
