Get a Valentine 1 radar detector. It's pricey but it's worth the money. I've had mine for awhile now and i've busted smokey everytime. Anything else and you risk getting busted. Radar detectors are not illegal. It's only illegal for commercial vehicals.
Valentine 1 is the way to go. Many of my friends have it, IM expecting mine in the mail sometime this week. The bogey counter and directional indicators def set this detector apart from the others.

They are legal in every state except VA and D.C. What are you talking about?

Man airborneflyguy, that sucks!

To others w/ a radar detector, that's fine but if you DO happen to get pulled over and the cop sees the detector, your dead.

The irony is, it is really hard to speed in DC anyway, unless you zip through at about 3am. With traffic lights about every 100 yeards, you are not going to speed in DC. Honestly, I live in northern VA and officers here use laser more than radar. Detectors are not so good at detecting laser in time, anyway. I look at speeding tickets like a tax, part of driving, I will get some tickets.

I got one of those. It works really well.

You know, this morning on my way to work there was this State Trooper suv on the Southern State Pkwy, the tropper was on the right lane and I was passing him on the left lane (with one other lane in between us), I see him switch to the middle lane and then he moves over to the left lane and gets behind me. I wasn't speeding or anything so I just kept on going for a while. I kinda felt like I was being escorted, since everyone was getting out of my way as soon as they saw the lights of the SUV behind me! I moved over to the middle lane after about a mile though, didn't want him to get pissed off and pull me over for no reason, I was kinda late for work anyways. That trooper got off the parkway on the next exit and I got back on the left lane.

About two miles later I get stuck behind a left lane squatter, there was no one on the right lane so I was waiting for a chance to switch lanes and swing around, but as I was going to hit the gas an Intrepid behind me decided to switch lanes (kinda fast), I look behind and there's a State Trooper flying towards the Intrepid!!! Good thing the intrepid slowed down, I only made it to the middle lane, stayed there for little while, made a couple of lane changes and then got off on my exit. Gotta thank the Intrepid driver for slowing me down, 'cause that trooper sure would have gotten me if the Intrepid didn't block me. I've avoided A LOT of tickets by just slowing down behind some slow drivers. There have been times when I was doing 80 on a 55 zone, I catch a slow driver and instead of passing them I just slow down, then right after I slow down there's a State Trooper on the side of the parkway!!
