Dash/console modification question.

Dash/console modification question.
My first post here and wanted to say I've found this to be a great forum! At 6'6' I haven't found many cars, especially sports cars that I could fit in comfortably. I've pretty much ruled them out till renting an '06 for a road trip this past weekend. I hadn't had that much fun driving a car in who knows how long!!! My only issue was with the center console, specifically the edges that are raised about 1 inch from the console. If anyone has worked on their dash, what is behind the trim pieces? Is it just a cover or is it solid? Could it be modified so that it was flush with the console? My right leg, while not wedged in there doesn't much room between the steering wheel and the console, so by making that raised portion flush with the console, I'd free up even more space. Maybe a smaller diameter steering wheel?
I spent 8 hours over two days in the car, but that corner was tough on my shin. Other than that, wow!
Thanks in advance for any help you could provide!
There are some arrows pointing to the console pieces I'm interested in trimming, but you have to click on the image to see them.

RE: Dash/console modification question.
You can't pull them off without first removing the top section of the center console. You can do that by removing the two phillips screws underneatht the console lid, then pull up to release the hidden clips holding the top section. Then you just pull those pieces off by pulling on them in a rearward direction. Once you pull them though, you will see that the only reason they are fashioned the way they are is to allow for the clips that hold them to the console and for a little asthetics. It would take some serious plastic filler and sanding and finding a way to mount them once complete. Good Luck if you try it, but I'd say try the pad first!
