I could be wrong but I always thought the static build up
is because of your shoes rubbing on the carpet. I had
a 97 Ranger that was really bad and I just got used to
using my arm when closing the door lol

Same thing has been happening to me since I got my GT Sierra. I don't know about yours, but I have the cloth interior, and I think the material has alot to do with it. You build up a charge just sitting in those seats. And then you're the first thing to touch ground.........zap!

yep thats how it works, thats how fires at gas stations start. Someone outs the nozzlein their car, getsin the car slides on the cloth seats, touches the nozzle first.....BOOM

My last two cars had cloth seats and it sounded like Rice Krispies when I got out of the car.

You can spray Static Guard used for clothing on the carpets and seat surfaces.

There is nothing wrong with the chassis ground on your car. As everyone else has already stated, your building up a static charge from the normal wiggling around we all do in the seat of our car. And since you're electrically seperated from your chassis, (nothing you touch is grounded to the chassis), when you get out, (standing on the insulating soles of your shoes, if you were barefoot, I think you would be ok), and touch the metal of the door, (which IS grounded) the electric "difference" between you and the car is neutralized and you get a shock.

It happens to me from time to time. But now, I closed the door by the window. No shock.

When you are about to get out touch the side of your car as you step out. Touching the metal first and keep touching it while putting your foot on the ground should solve your problem....or close the door by pushing on the window.
