Default How to "gut" out my cats?

For those that have done it, what did you use and how? What was the outcome? How much louder was the exhaust and was there any driveability difference in the way it felt?

Thanks!

Why not just install a catless off road pipe?

I live in TX and my muffler shop guy told me that they just look under the car to make sure there are cats and then just check that there are no engine codes.

Isn't that like a Federal Offense or something?

How often do you need to get smogged in TX? I'm in CA and I don't even need smog for the first 4 years. Besides, it's easy enough to change the x-pipe out if need be. IF for some reason you had to replace the stock cat after you gut them, I GUARANTEE they are a hell of a lot more than an x-pipe.

Because, in Texas, it would be a violation of their laws concerning tampering with emissions equipment. A vehicle designed for street use, cannot have off road pipes installed, and stay in compliance ... even if it's only used off-road.

With a $25K fine for getting caught, and it even being a criminal misdemeanor in many states, I don't think any performance or sound gains would be worth the effort. There are other ways to gain HP and sound, while staying legal.

If you sell the vehicle with a gutted cat, and the new owner or dealership finds out at a later date, you can also be sued, in addition to the above mentioned governmental penalties.

25k sounds a little steep, are you sure that's right?

I would never gut my cats. It flows terrible and sounds like crap. Try looking for high flow cats or just go with O/R pipes and move to Florida. I've been told they have no emission laws.
