Installing theSteeda/Pro 5.0 Shifter
My first Wrenching Mod is done , Hopefully it will help a few others if they purchase this. I paid $290 for it , as I thought the Stock shifter blew chunks getting into 3rd gear. I am trying to get each pic in order , hopefully it will all work out.
1st , assemble the shifter , making sure everything is tight.
Second , Set up your car. I (and prolly 99.9% don`t have a lift in your garage ), so lets use jackstands and garage jacks , not forgetting the wheel blocks.
Take the boot off the console , it pops right out , and unscrew the shift **** , it come off in one piece and set aside.
push the outer edge of the inner boot down into the floor

RE: Installing theSteedaPro 5.0 Shifter
Now its time to get under and get to work. Take a good look and use a good light.
Thought for a minute I was going to need a new tool , but as luck would have it , it took a 12mm 16 point socket , but first , mark your bolts and what bolts go where , as it is balanced. Look out for any shims , mine did not have any , but yours might. Look up at the stock shifter and you see two 10 mm bolts (and you need a long socket for this) and a 13mm for the linkage bolt

RE: Installing theSteedaPro 5.0 Shifter
Now use the emergency brake , as your rear wheels should be off the ground (so you can turn the driveshaft) and take off the driveshaft bolts. You will have to pry the driveshaft off the back of the tranny , I used a brake tool as it was handy, and it worked fine. Move it off to the side. The 2 10mmm back bolts are a pain , but the real test is the support bolt , as it has no space at all , and you have to use a small wrench on it , and being a Old carpel-tunnel inflicted gear-head , it took some painful time to do. It will fall right out for ya , and lay it along side of the new shifter.

RE: Installing theSteedaPro 5.0 Shifter
Take your 13mm and disconnect the linkage at the shifter and leave the other end attached. Out it falls. Now you have to take the sleeve out of the stock shifter , and put it into the new one. A touch of sewing machine oil does wonders. Keep the side of the sleeve correct. The stock bushing comes into two pieces , just take it out without marring it and all will be well. Now after this , its ready to put the new one in.

RE: Installing theSteedaPro 5.0 Shifter
I attached the back brace bolts first , just kinda loose , so it would not fall and smack me in the face. Now comes the hardest part , getting the bracing 10mm bolt into the front of the brace and tranny , as there is absolutly no room , so it takes a while and a little patience (yeah right) and a lot of cussing. Once it gets started , all will be well. Attach up the linkage with the supplied bushings , the big bushing goes on the DRIVERS SIDE!!!!!! Do not screw this part up. After making sure everything is tightened back up , get out from under and climb on into the front seat

RE: Installing theSteedaPro 5.0 Shifter
You now have to adjust the stops on the shifter so you don`t screw up the linkage and tranny. I used a feeler gauge (yeah I have had one forever) and they reccomend a 020 gap because the shifter will move a little more when running compaired to being off. I used Locktite (medium) on the stops , as I don`t need them comming apart later on. The stops ar 1/2 in , go figure on a metric car . Tighten up the stops with your Locktite , Run thru your gears to make sure you have `nuff clearance , then put your inner boot over the shifter. The directions say to take back out the shifter (oh yeah , sure thing) but it goes on well `nuff , as a screwdriver works wonders and it goes in easily. Screw back on your Shift **** , and snap back in your boot.
You aint done yet!!!
Now get your locktite and re-align your driveshaft bolts , locktite the threads and put everything back in order. TORQUE WRENCH TIME!!!! 79 foot pounds . MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS!!!!!! Go over all of your bolts for tightness , ALL OF THE BOLTS!!!! The carfully remove the rear jacks and let the Stang come back on down. GO PLAY!
Hope this helps someone.

KdF,
What time is your next available appointment??
Seriously, great detailed post, for someone that has been putting this mod off. This is as good as the Hurst instructions from the post in Muscle Car Mag.
But, how are the results??
Great job, and thanks,
Mike

Results are favorable. A little noisier than the stock , but the offset for 3rd gear is worth the trouble. You have to pull the shifter to the driver for 1st and 2nd , but just slap it straight up for 3rd and it does not seem to miss.

RE: Installing theSteedaPro 5.0 Shifter
Shift to second gear is fine. Only noticeable change is that reverse is kinda hard , or should I say , not as pronounced as the stock shifter. It will take some getting used too I guess. Maybe a little break-in on it`s part.
