2006 GT Roof question
Hi everybody, I just picked up a 2006 Black Mustang GT yesterday. Great car, I had to get an automatic though cause the wife wanted to drive it; but that is ok it is still a fun car! I have a question about the roof. I got caught in the rain and noticed that some of the rain drops were causing a pinging noise on the roof of the car. When I got home I tapped the roof of the car and it sounds hollow. Is this normal? It is ok if it is, otherwise I guess some sort of insulation or padding was not installed between the roof and headliner and I will have to go back to the dealer. When you tap the roof of your coupe does it sound like it is hollow???
Hope to learn lots from all of you!!!
Thanks,
Chris

RE: 2006 GT Roof question
What insulation! The only insulation in the whole car is behind the rear panel under the rear windows, and that is just cheap little piece of carpet padding. I had less than 300 miles on mine before I decided to do something about the hollow tin can sound. I bought 200 sq.ft of second skin's damplifier and 8 gallons of the spectrum( liquid sound deadening ) I also got 10 sheets of nuprene off ebay. I took everything out except the dash and covered it with the damdlifier sheets then brushed and sprayed the spectrum on and then covered everything with the nuprene foam rubber. I even took the inner fender liners out and covered them and used three gallons of spectrum to undercoat the entire underside of the car. It took me three weekends from start to finish, but now my mustang is quiet inside.

Yep it is normal and almost all cars are like this. Bare thin sheet metal under the headliner. The only way to make it a bit quieter is to remove the headliner whihc will require removal of most the interior panels and then Dynamat it.

RE: 2006 GT Roof question
yeah everyones sounds hollow like that but that is bc all of the rigidity in the new platform comes from the 4 side beams that surround roof...its the reason the glassback is possible bc even without the thin sheetmetal roof the mustang still retains ALL of its rigidity...if you look closely at the roof it looks almost like you can pry it up like the top of a paint can...(i wish we could to drive open on a sunny day)..so it may sound kinda cheap but dont worry its 10 X stronger than the sn197's or foxes....
