Default Exhaust Tips - Chrome or Polished Stainless Steel?

I went to the local muffler shop to inquire about purchasing chrome exhaust tips for my GT...a minor mod that there has been frequent reference to in this forum. The exhaust guy told me not to get chrome tips because they would yellow from the heat and to purchase polished stainless steel instead. In fact he did not even carry chrome tips.

Is he right?

He is correct for the most part. They may yellow eventually, but the main concern is rusting unless you polish them constantly. With the stainless, this is not an issue.

So when people refer to chrome tips in this forum, do they really mean polished SS?

Honestly, unless you go with cheap tips from a generic parts store, most all axle back setups and such use the SS tips.

Bump...

Those of you who have exhaust tips...are they chrome or stainless steel? Any problems with discoloration?

My tips are from ford and are stainless.

When getting exhaust tips. Stainless is always a better idea. Chromed steel doesent hold up well at all back there.

Chrome will pit and rust eventually. There isnt that much heat back there to discolor. But the stainless are nice in that they can be brought back to perfect any time with a few minutes polishing.

I bought a Stainless Steel exhaust tip made by Gibson. It's a nice simple tip. I bought it at A & A Auto Parts for around $38.00

The stock ones (non exterior pkg) are stainless, but the tips that are also avaliable from Ford are Chrome plated stainless.

I bought a set of 4" SS tips from Fast Toysfor my wifes GT and they look great. We cut a little of the exhaust off before welding them on. It did also made the car sound a little deeper and better even though she still has the stock mufflers.
