I also do not know what causes it but I get it hot or cold. It is truly one of the best sounds ever. My exhaust is stock and I love down shifting, letting the RPM's drop and listening to the gurgle!!!!

If you can get it loud enough - you can use to express your frustration...

It says to the car in front of you - "I just had to SLOW down because of YOU! YES YOU! SPEED THE !@#$ UP!" At least that's what I use it for...
