Which is Faster stock?

I dont see how. The 71 is heavier and has a smaller engine. Where as the boss 429's were literally detuned NASCAR's. Cuz the drag pack option offered polyglass tires and a 9" with a 4.11. Im not saying the 71 is slow by any means, but I just cant see it winning.
And to all of you saying Saleens are the fastest stangs, well thats like Lingenfelder (sp?) vettes are the fastest. Maybe the question should what are the fastest stangs that were built by Ford?

the 1971 BOSS 351 was quicker in the quarter than the BOOS 429 stock...no joke

I guess the order is, shelby cobra (although I dont know any specs yet), 2000 Cobra R, then 1969 Boss 429. I actually think the Boss is the fastest, 12.5 bone stock on old school bias ply tires, so I'd imagine on slicks it would be A LOT faster.

0-60 5.4
1/4 mile 13.9 at 103 mph
Which is very close to the 1968 Corvette, 427 tri-power.
Could a 351 be faster? Maybe. Higher compression, better cams, etc.
There is several things that hold back those old cars.
1) Excagerated HP/Tq ratings. Until 72 (IIRC), the engines were run on a stand, with headers, and no accesories. Putting exhaust manfolds, altenators etc pulled down the real world power signifigantly.
2) Drivability. For those that haven't driven old cars, the engines were quirky. They may make a ton of power at 4500 rpm, but be dead 3000-3500. Hammer the gas to hard, make the car "bog" when too much gas gets forced into the engine. Don't get me strarted on mechanichal distrubutors, or "points".
3) Suspension. The older cars really lack the ability to put the power to the ground consistently. Wheel hop.............. weak springs, etc. etc.
The current cars are FAR easier to drive, and drive well.
Current cars at 0-60 in the lower 5 second range, are much quicker than most of the revered Mustangs of the past, while getting far better mileage.
The 390 HP Cobras of a few years ago are probably some of the quickest/fastest Mustangs.
The current GT500 is the quickest/fastest 0-60 in 4.5.

RE: Which is Faster stock?
I have a "Muscle Car Milestones" magazine from 2004 and it has a list of the top 10 fastest.
#1 427 Cobra (66-67) - since its not really a Mustang, I say put the new GT500 here
#2 2000 Ford Saleen Mustang SR
#3 2000 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R
#4 1999 Ford Saleen Mustang S-351
#5 2003 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra
#6 1969 Boss 429 Mustang
#7 2003 Mach 1
#8 1971 Boss 351
#9 1969 Mustang Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet
#10 1969 Shelby GT-500
I'm not sure how accurate that is, but its just what I see here in the magazine.
