Swapping Hoods vs Custom Metalwork

Swapping Hoods vs Custom Metalwork
So I'm reading all these hood threads and wondering to myself - "self, why are all these people scrapping a perfectly good all aluminum hood in favor of cheap fiberglass and composites". The only reason I could think of is that a lot of you are hell bent on going broke, so I would like to suggest an alternative.
Take your existing hood to a body shop/custom crafter/hot rod garage, and have them craft you something that might fit your exact needs. That sure as hell is better than throwing out a perfectly good factory unit that was designed to be lightweight in the first place and at least last a bit longer than your average celophane special.

I take it you have never tried to make an all metal cowl hood using a stock hood? If you haven't then don't suggest it. I have made a cowl hood out of a stock hood before and it is very difficult to get the sides straight and make it where it won't crack. The one I made i spent well over 20 hours fabbing and welding if you pay someone to do it you are going to spend a lot more than if you just buy a hood.

Ummmm... I'm an old hot rodder, from the day when fabrication was the only way you got it done. Back in the day, I had a 69 Mach 1 with vents cut into flat black hood. The local body shop did it for 200 hundred bucks.
A plastic DCF hood now costs 1500, unpainted. I'll go with an all metal hood any day. By the way, I've heard Foose is putting out an all aluminum hood through CDC.

Like I said, you are better off buying an aftermarket hood.

If I had any experience at fabrication, I would totally do this.. even if it was alot more work simply because I like doing stuff like this. But alas, I have no experience in fabrication... but I wish I did, just cant figure out how to learn without spending a fortune on trial and error...

who makes plastic hoods anyways. Even though the stock hood looks like plastic. "a perfectly good all aluminum hood" yeah right. On a day drving home from work some little girl ran across the street coming outta nowhere. I hit her and she left her hand print on my hood. Luckily I wasn't speeding cause it was a residential area. So now I'm driving around with bumps on my hood.
