More Fun on Street With 4.10's?
I know that LOTS of you guys have 4.10's in your five speed GT's. I expect that most of you do this for better drag strip times. Have any of you done it strictly for street driving and if so, did it make the car more fun to drive?
I expect that with this peaky engine, the gears will make it feel peppier, but theoretically all it would be doing would be giving you a very low, low gear and take away the overdrive effect from fifth gear. I am all for doing this if it will make the car feel peppier at lower RPM driving. I'm an old guy and although I do rev it up sometimes and have some fun, to me it is more fun driving a car with mid range, push you against the seat, kind of guts that you feel in ordinary driving rather than only when you want to drive the car as if you were mad at it. The muscle cars of old would give you that push even at part throttle, low RPM driving.
Thanks for your comments.

I have 4.10s and they are great! No issues with a busier shifter! Less time between 1st and 2nd, but much peppier and a lot more fun. 4.10s are the way to go unless you are going for top speed over 100 mph.

The 4.10s are great! As for more shifting ... i say i do way less shifting, considering that it takes less effort for the car to go in a higher gear. Like when i used to have to be in first or second gear to get somewhere, i can just leave it in third or fourth and be fine. The only true differences is that you are in 5th gear faster (to save on gas if you want to), and you also lose some gas mileage ... this past weekend i tested out the gas mileage and I truthfully only lost a mile and a half per gallon ... which i look at like this ... it's a measly 24 miles less than i could have driven before with the 3.55s.

Good topic, MBDiagMan. I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my automatic BUT I do wonder....since these Mustangs simply don't have anywhere near the low end torque of the muscle cars of my youth, how much will 4.10s really help with simple street pep. The only experience I've had along these line was buying an Avalanche with a factory 4.10 gear in '02. With its weight, it definitely felt better than the ones with the standard 3.73 offered then (and didn't seem to hurt the gas mileage at all).
Also, at what cost? I've seen some threads touching on this subject but none that specifically say how much a dealer has charged to make the swap.

A good part of the "seat of the pants" kick of the muscle cars of old was having the 4 bbl carb. I'm thinking 4.10's, probably next year. ...just for a little more fun on the street. ...not a daily driver, small fuel mileage loss not a factor.

Off topic, but what is the proper way to talk about gears to someone? It's a ratio right? So would you say 4 to 10 or 4 10's? I always just say 3 55's when someone asks me what gears it has, but i'm not sure that's correct.
