Archion is correct and you DO NOT need them. They cannot in any way shape or form be used to release the a/c line, a special tool is required for that and it looks just like the tool to disconnect the fuel lines.

This is what it look like

Why doesn't someone just write Ford a letter and ask them what's the purpose of those plastic "rings?"

HAHA.... write Ford a letter - -- that would just generate a computer lettter thanking you for writing a letter to Ford. The likely hood of Ford Customer Service being able to answer that question, or knowing who to forward the letter to for the answer is less then your likelyhood of winning the LOTO...
