Oil change at 500 miles

Oil change at 500 miles
I read a few posts about the advisability of having the oil changed in a new Mustang at 500 miles, and then 1,500 miles to clean out new-engine metal scrapings and debris, and then every 3,000 miles after what. I took my new 2007 Mustang Deluxe with 500 miles on the 4.0 engine to the dealer and was told that the engine is already broken in at the factory and the oil would have already been changed at the equivalent of 500 miles. So, who do I believe. My Ford dealer or the posts I’ve read here?

Ah, personally..I would wait a little longer to change the oil. I'll say around 3-5K, but if you drive your Pony hard (i.e., lots of stop and go...long idles, extended high speeds or high mileage in a short time, etc), you may want to change it sooner. I have three Ford vechicles now (99 Ranger, 04 Expedition and 06 Stang). Bought them when they were brand new and have follow the manufacurer's recommended oil change interval. I've never had a problem in this area.

I changed it at 500, 1500, and then again at 4500. I put in Mobil 1 at 4500. This is peace of mind. How often SHOULD you trust a dealer? Call me a cynic, but I don't trust any of them.

I changed mine at 75 miles. It can't hurt. I have also had engines I didn't change until 3000 miles that went way over 100,000 miles. Changing oil at 500 miles is probably overkill but to me oil is cheap so I did it at 75 miles.

RE: Oil change at 500 miles
The 500 to 1000 mile oil and filter change is probably the most important one for your engine. All hi-po engines (motorcycles and hi-po cars (like M-Beemers)) require this. Most cars/trucks have removed this requirement for 1) advertised maintenance cost reductions, and 2) most folks never intend to keep their cars for over 70-100k mile marks. Few people want to do this because "it is better for the motor."

The filter does NOT catch all the junk! The microscopic metallic particulate is not caught by the filter. The only way to keep it under control is with a magnetic drain plug. Draining the initial oil might be overkill, but it is not a bad thing to do.

I dont believe that.... if they say you should.. then why dont they say that inside the owners manual? IMO stick to the book, and if anything happens.. blame the book.. its a printed document that shows you followed their instructions.. if you go against it, they can nail you for it...
