345's ??
I find it hard to believe those tires are 2 3/8" wider then my tires (285vs.345) Not really saying they are not, but I would really like to see a shot from directly behind to see how they placed a 13 1/2" wide tire inside the fender lip. Hmm 12 inch wide rim with a +78mm backspacing? WOW! That's an eye opener!
lol Here's a pic of my tiny 285's

I am running 295s in the rear on custom wheels that were widened by Weldcraft in Michigan.
The outside lip of the wheel is in the exact same position as stock. The extra width is therefore contained strictly on the inside of the fenderwell. With this setup, there is about one-half inch of clearance between the inside edge of the wheel/tire and the rear shocks. Personally, I think that is about the minimum amount of clearnace that is feasible for safety's sake.
Therefore, if you want to keep the outside edge of the wheels in the OEM position, you can't go much wider than a 295. Of course, tire widths do vary from company to company, and there are various factors that will affect the section width of the tire, including wheel width. With the right choice of wheel you might be able to fit a 305 in there, or maybe even a 315, but you need to take careful measurements. Any more and you'll have to either get different wheels that stick out wider than the fenders, or you'll have to modify the bodywork and suspension to get more width on the inside.

LOL!
Oh! Now the complete story comes out! ANYONE that could fit a 12 cylinder into a S197 would have NO PROBLEMS fitting 345's under the same car!! (or any car for that matter) I should have guessed it was a one off car. I take back what I typed as I was only considering 'normal' cars! You know, the ones that we mortals can afford!
CrazyAl hit on something that is right on! When comparing numbers alone for tires sizes it just you in the ball park not every tire with the same size marking is the same size! And this even differs when comparing between different styles from same brand tire.
