Default High frequency whine

Last night my wife said she hears a whine coming from the engine compartment when I accelerate. It doesn't do it when I'm stopped or if I give it gas when stopped.
Since I have a high frequency hearing loss, I have no idea what she's talking about.
It's cold here in Nebraska right now (10-20 degrees) I don't know if it's cold weather related.
Has anyone else had this experience?
