Default Road racing equipment needed. tires, rollcage, brakes.

Hi guys, Ive been doing a good bit of road racing, and autocrossing, and I need to buy new tires. Does anyone have any experience in some road racing tires? Or hi performance brakes? Also, does anyone have any racing seats with harnesses?

Thanks

Tires: try Michelin Pilots. Excellent autocross tire.

Brakes: if you're serious about it, look at the kits from Wilwood, Baer, or Brembo's Gran Turismo line.

As for the harnesses, you need a roll cage first. Harnesses require a roll cage for proper mounting. Find a professional shop that specializes in that sort of thing, that is not something you should leave to amateurs.

I second the Michilin Pilot Sports. Once you have learned exactly how your car handles you can try the Sport Cups which are an "R Compound" tire. The Sport Cups are very sticky. Even though the Sport Cups are DOT rated, they are not meant for street driving. They don't have much tread and wear very fast.

You might also want to look at Stoptech brakes. Very similar to Brembos, which are probably the best brakes you can buy, but a lot cheaper. A Brembo GT kit for the front will run about $3200. The equivalent Stoptech kit is about $2400. I don't know much about the Baers but I have heard mixed reviews about the Wilwoods. The 2 piece rotors are the best design but also the most expensive. You should also swap out the stock brake hoses for braided stainless steel hoses. Most of the kits come with them. I believe that all the manufactures are making models for the front only. The reason has to do with the sensitivity of the Mustang ABS system. The stock rears should work fine with the SS brake lines.

I also second CrazyAl on the harnesses. However, you do not have to put in a full cage. A 4 point or 6 point roll bar may be enough for your needs. The difference is the cage will have bars going along the roof line to the A pillars and down to the floor. Some also have bars that run next to the seats. Great protection but a pain for daily use.

One other thing. If you feel that you are driving close enough to the limits of the car to require harnesses and a roll cage you need to put a HANS device, or some other type of head restraint, on the "must have " list.

if this is your daily driver do not put anything more thne a 4point cage unless you feel like wearinga helmet everyday.

cages that go infront of the driver seat are a hazard in daily driving as just a small bump can cause your head flying into one of those metal bars, not good =O

Bride racing seats are excellent, Recaro too.

Generally all the seat makers also have harnesses, i think recaro has a harness that would go along with their seats, probably a 4pt to 5pt harness would be best.

i think you should stick with a 4pt cage if youre gonna street it, if not then get a 12pt, but it would be best like stated above to go to a local shop to get it done as bolt in cages fitment are exactly the best.

as far as autox / road course tires go...

Advan Neovas

toyo ra-1

falken azenis

those tires above will provide excellent grip on the track.

Wow, all excellent replies!
The seat is a must, after a days event I was sore for 2 days holding myself in the seat all day.

The mich typeR's would be the best for the road course, but not street as mentioned.
I ran my Goodyear Eagle F1's on the coarse and they held pretty damn good.
