1st, 2nd, 3rd --> High RPM

1st, 2nd, 3rd --> High RPM
So here's what happened after work tonight:
I got into my car, started it up and put it into gear. I have an automatic and when I went to shift into drive, I passed 'D' and moved into third. Before taking off, I put the shifter back up into place and left the parkinglot. Sometime down the road, as I passed another car, I hear my engine over the radio and looked down to see that it was running high RPMs...again. I don't know what it is or what causes it and it's happened a few times before, but whenever I move into either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd- whether intentionally or not, then into drive, the car won't drop below 3500 RPMs. I mean, it sounds so much better and moves so much quicker when I'm resting on 3500 and jump to 4k+ RPMs from any speed, but how bad is that for the car? I know it's not natural, but I'm not sure how harmful it is.
Slipping into neutral then back into drive fixes the problem..But I don't want to fix it, I want to be louder. [:@]
