Being bored and curious at the same time results in interesting things. I decided to take my mufflers off today just to see how the car sounded. It actually sounds pretty good, but it drives horrible. Above 2k RPM, the revs drop like molasses. This probably a backpressure issue?

I really doubt I'm burning the valves with as much pipe as there is left in the system. I've only seen valve burning occur when running open headers? Either way, the mufflers are going back on tonight or tomorrow.

backpreasure is a MYTH, YOU DO NOT WANT BACKPREASURE!!!!!have the car tuned, ive been running no mufflers on my camaro for 5k and know that it pulls alot harder in the top end then stock

Backpressure or not, I'm not going to get the car tuned to run w/out mufflers. They're going back on tomorrow until I order my axle-back.

errr...backpressure is not a myth [&:]. And you don't need back pressure, but the car is tuned with a certain level of backpressure from the factory, so drastically changing it would change the drivability...shouldn't do that from mufflers being takenoff, but if you were to just run headers it would run differently of course...

I took my mufflers off about 4 months ago and I love it!

Of course, I run a V6 so it may be a different result with the GT...I dunno.

But it sounds awesome...people mistake it for a GT just by the sound. I've had no problems with back pressure or anything else with the car. I had a custom made muffler put on with a nice tip just for looks and it also centralizes the sound to the back of the car now. I'll try to get pics this weekend to post.

P.S. I've seen better gas mileage too.

Since the stock GT mufflers are chambered, backpressure was probably reduced significantly, which theoretically is a good thing. However, Backpressure is not the only thing you need to worry about. Exhaust Gas Flow is also a performance factor, and when that was altered, your engine'sexhaust flow dynamicreacted accordingly.

there is almst no difference between running no mufflers and slp LM's which ALOT of guys have...they have no complaints and i have them also.......i would be concerned about the exhuast being dumped right by the gas tank if you took off the mufflers tho
