Max tire size on stock rims

Max tire size on stock rims
I posted this in the wheel and tire section but got no responses so I'll try here. What is the max tire size I can put on the stock 17" GT rims. I wanted to go 275 40 17 but I don't know if they will fit. And correct me if I'm wrong but are the stock rims 17x8? Further, if anyone knows of any good tire/wheel combos right now please feel free to share. Thanks!

RE: Max tire size on stock rims
How much does a 305 tire weigh? I was looking at a 275/55/17 to put on the stock rims until I noticed that they weigh 40lbs each!!!!!!!! That's 11lbs of added rotational mass. Now i'm thinking a 255/50/17 is a better option, but won't look nearly as good as a 305.

Stock is 17X8 and the max is 275's. i think 18X9 or 18X10's would be the way to go, going that way for me. then get some 295 or 305 tires for them.

Just so you know, while an awesome piece of work, the Excel spreadsheet is worthless with just the viewer(you can't do anything with it, just look at it).
There is currently a free trial for 60 days of the Office 2007 suite or you can email it to yourself at work if you have Excel there.

I posted this same question awhile back and received some decent feedback. Especially from LanceH. Check out this thread...We were talking about 18inchers but this should still be helpful.

Or if you don't have Excel, you can calculate the numbers on this webpage:
