Default Changing rearend oil?

Can I change the rear gear oil without a pump? I thought if I disconnect the shocks I could lower the rear enough to use a funnel, but i'm not sure.

Thanks

I know some people on here have changed their gear oil. I want to know if I can refill it without the use of a hand pump?

Most likley not. I do not think there will be enough clearance to use a funnel. The only thing you might be able to try is to some how rig a hose to the top of the gear oil bottle and use the bottle. Why don't you want to use a pump? It makes thing so easy.

Pumps are cheap at the local parts house. Best to use one or a big mess may happen.

Thanks. I've never changed gear oil before so i wasn't sure if a pump was necessary or not.

You should also get a vacuum pump to draw the old gear oil out. Saves you from removing the cover and possible leaks resulting from such. Boy - a dollar bung and drain plug on the housing would have been great.

I used a hose ontop of the bottle like mentioned, it wasn't bad, but the pump would have been alot easier and faster.

Now you tell me! I've allready been to carquest and advanced auto and got a hand pump that attaches to the quart of oil. Carquest had vaccum pumps that you use to suck the oil out and I guess squirt it in. Carquest is the only place in my area that carries royal purple gear oil.

I bought some grey gasket maker, but I might just get the vaccum pump and suck out the old oil. Is there any disadvantage to doing it that way?

Instead of buying another pump to suck the oil out simply go to Ace Hardware and buy a longer piece of clear tubing/hose to attach the the pump you already have and use it to suck the oil out.

I dont like to just suck the oil out of the rear end. I always pull the cover. That way you can make sure you all of it out and can inspect for shavings.
