4.10 Gear How to?

RE: 4.10 Gear How to?
I'm pretty damn good at working on cars but trannys and rear end gears, i leave to the professionals.
If you can find a write upor watch how the person that installs them, that would help. Also if you can work on a junked rear end to practice. but i woudln't practice on my own car. It looks easy but watching backlash and knowing how and when it needs more or less shims and on what side to place them and so on.
If you do it yourself good luck with it.

yeah but apparently there are a few different ford part numbers, some are made via the old multi pass cutting process and some are made by a single pass machining process.
this leads to concerns about getting screwed - i know richmond has been making performance gears for a long time and according to summit they also make "lightened" gear sets which could equal more HP getting to the ground (maybe)

RE: 4.10 Gear How to?
I've been doing a lot or research here, I am planning to get 4.10's in the future. Here's what I have learned: There are two sets of FRPP gears, they have the same part number EXCEPT one set has an "A" as the last charecter and the other has an "M". The "M" gears are made by Motive in Italy and are $25-$50 cheaper, and are more apt to whine when installed. The "A" gears are American made, cost more, and much LESS apt to be noisy after installed. When you see Ford 4.10 gears advertised for $160-$185 in the magazines, they are almost certainly the Motive made gears. A lot of better installers won't even do the "M" gears because they know about this. I have read that Motive gears can be quiet, but more often than not, they make noise. So, please keep this in mind when you are buying your gears, in this case, you surely get what you pay for..
