What's the deal with tires!!
I'm in the process of searching for rims and tires. I know what rims I want, but I'm looking for tires and I didn't know there are so many angles.
I have been reading in the forum about summer tires, winter tires, all-season tires...I'm an old-fashioned kind of gal. What happened to just TIRES.
Do I have to buy summer tires for the summer?? winter for the winter?? Because ALL-SEASON seems pretty cool to me!!
Does all season mean I can keep them on all the time? I'm in a place where the winters are not so harsh. Just really cold at times. Not alot of snow, like say, Michigan.

Welcome to our little family!
Take some time and research tires on tirerack.com or tiredirect.com.
Summer tires = more grip - more wear.
Read!
Enjoy your Mustang, Sally!

RE: What's the deal with tires!!
summer tires look better and will give you better traction in dry weather but usually aren't high millage.
winter tires are taller for winter. they have a deeper tread so they can give better traction in rain, snow, mud etc.
all season is in the middle.
so the questions is which what's the weather like for you, can you afford two sets (one for winter and one for summer).

For all season, the Pirelli P-Zero Nero tires that come stock on the Mustang are great.
Here's a link: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ero+Nero+M%26S.
If you want better performance, upgrade to a set of summer and set of winter tires, and change them with the season. Your local Firestonehas cheap but capable performance tires in both catagories. Goodyear F1 are great summer/rain tires. Yokahama Ice Guard are my fav winter ones.

As you have the rims picked out, now you need to find a tire that will fit on them. Tire Rack should be able to help. Their website can do most all you want it to if you take the time to look around it. If I were you, I would search for a high performance or ultra high performance all season tire. That way you will have dry, wet, and light snow covered quite well.
Take the time to read reviews, look at Tire Rack's surveys, and read their test results. Search elsewhere on the 'net, too. Don't be turned away from a tire manufacturer if they have one or two tires that don't perform so well, they may have others that perform very well. It goes the other way, too. Just because they have a bunch that perform well, does not mean they make lemon or two in their mix.Few if any manufacturers hit a home run with every model of tire they build. You need to do a lot of reading.
For me, I decided on a set of American Racing "Casino" rims in 18 x 8. The finish is Diamond Cut Finished Alloy which is then cleared over. It will work fine year around here. I then decided on a set of Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S in 255/45/18. They are not cheap, but I did a bunch of research and was happy with what folks have to say about them. They should be a great ultra high perf. all season tire.
Good luck!

If you're bucks-up enough, something out of what Tire Rack categorizesas "High Performance All-Season" or higher should work for you year 'round (I've got a stack of Bridgestone RE960AS waiting for me to install on one of my cars as I sit here typing instead).
In any event, do yourself a big favor and make your choice based on tire grip and other measures of performance. Noise and treadlife are only tie-breakers - and if my experience is any indication at all, about once or twice per set of tires you'll be really glad if you chose grip rather thanextra tread life, tire sets generally being much less expensive than sheetmetal repair. Look at the tire grading codes, and don't even consider anything with less than an "A" for traction or "B" for temperature.
A word concerning different sizes front vs rear - not all ABS systems are happy with that situation and may go into operation too soon (it may think thatthe smaller tires are decelerating too quickly relative to the bigger pair), with the end result being a longer stopping distance. Different sizes with the same OD (within 3% or so) is probably OK. I don't know whether the Mustang's ABS follows this logic or not; only that it is something to consider.
Hope this has helped.

RE: What's the deal with tires!!
I DID LOTS OF RESEARCH FOR MY TIRES. I WANTED THE MOST PERFORMANCE, BEST IN ALL WEATHER, THAT CAME WITH THE WIDEST WIDTH IN 20'S. I GOT TOYO PROXES 04 - THEY ARE M+S TIRES. THAT MEANS MUD AND SNOW TIRE RATING. DOES'NT MEAN GO OFFROADING BUT THEY HAVE BETTER TRACTION IN HARSH WEATHER BECAUSE OF HIGH AMOUNTS OF GROOVING IN THE PATTERN. LOOK IT UP AT TOYOTIRES.COM. I PUT 295/30/20 IN THE REARS. GOOD LUCK.

RE: What's the deal with tires!!
Another brand to look into is the BF Goodrich KDW tires. Excellent wet and dry traction and since not in MI. I feel they will work just fine for you. Now just get a number($) in mind that you want to spend on tires and go from there. What size rim r u going with? Anyway some of the sponsers will help you when you know what you want to spend. Welcome to the forum and the family! J
