Try turning the key to "on" for 10-15 seconds before turning it to "start".

This allows the fuel pump to get up to pressure when starting a cold engine.

The pressure should hold to help for this problem when the key is turned off. A problem that could cause this is a leaking injector or pressure lost through the pump.
