IM HAVING A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING THIS WHOLE CONCEPT OF OCTANE AND TUNING. IN CALI WE ONLY HAVE 87, 89, AND 91. I ALWAYS HAVE RAN 91 IN THIS CAR. SHOULD I RUN A 91 TUNE? CAN I RUN A 93 TUNE TO GIVE MORE POWER OR DO I HAVE TO PUT 93 OCTANE?

Depends upon the tune. I have what Brenspeed calls their "California 93 tune" I run this tune most of the time with 91 octane, with no problem. Again, the tune is tweaked to run with 91 octane California fuel. Sometimes I dial it down to the actual 91 octane tune, just depends upon the mood..........

I think that you would want to go with the 91 octane tune.

AT THE EXPENSE OF SOUNDING IGNORANT, WHY WOULD YOU SWITCH BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN ACTUAL 91 TUNE AND CLIFORNIA 93 TUNE? DOES THE CAR RUN DIFFERENTLY BETWEEN THE TUNES? AND HOW SO?

I installed a JLT-2 with Brenspeed 87 octane tune this past Friday. I drove it Sunday and when I gave it a test run andran it up in 2nd gear it seemed like there was a very slight pinging noise while in the upper RPMs. Could it be running a bit lean?

I don't think it sounds ignorant at all. Actually, I re-load my tune pretty much every week. Just seems to keep the tune fresh, as opposed to the computer learning specific driving habits.....Sometimes I will re-load the Cali 93 tune, sometimes I will re-load the 91 tune. The 93 tune is alot touchier, as far as throttle response, where to me, the 91 tune feels a bit milder in first, but is torquier than hell in second and third. Just my perception.....

Unfortunately, some *** hat in another Mustang (hated to do it) pulled a ricer fly by on me this morning on the way to work. I had just loaded the 91 tune yesterday. We caught up together at the next light....(he did the fly by in the left turn lane, I might add....thus, the ***-hat statement) I looked over, and he was wearing Cobra badges and I'm thinkin, oh crap.....I kinda loped off the line, but he jumped, so I HAD to reciprocate......spun second gear good, but still waxed his ***.....(no way it was a true Cobra, musta been posing....) Like I said, the 91 tune is very torquey........The both have their pros and cons.

Each tune has different fuel/timing maps based on the octane of gas that you're using. The higher the octane the more you can advance your timing without getting preignition (fuel igniting before it should based off of just pressure and heat, no spark) All cars benefit from a semicustom or aftermarket tune. Factory tunes are conservative for fuel consumption so you give up some performance.

The 05+ mustangs really benefit from more customized tuning since they have throttle by wire instead of mechanical throttle like 04 and older stangs. Basically everything is computer controlled, including the throttle.

I don't know specifically about the "california 93" tune but I do know 93 is not available in Cali. Might be a modified 91 or 93 that has all the same settings as a 93 but backs off a few degrees of timing to work with 91..?
