but yeah, i have no idea how to describe it. "lighter than black, darker than grey"

Dark gray metallic was what I was going to say. In certain light the car looks almost black at times at night. My bro has the MKZ in Alloy metallic and it really is like the name says. Its a metal (alloy) like color with metallic in it....does that help?...LOL J
