I also would like to change out my gears from 3.31s to 3.73s or 4.10s and whenever I look at online retailers, they offer an "install kit" that costs like $75 or so and some other stuff as well. Is this stuff that an installer is already going to have? Or if I buy the parts for the install should I also buy the entire "kit"???

Some people say that if the car has low miles you can reuse the bearings and shims but I would get the install kit because the new gears require the installer to hammer off the origional bearings off the pinion and this could damage them. and you may need extra shims to correct the lash.

My 4.10's cost 450.00 with FRPP gears, instll kit and install. and I love them, 4.10's rock.

$250-$300 is about right for labor and some gear oil

$ for parts depends who which gears you buy and who makes them ($170-$230)

Shims cost a few bucks on top of that or you can buy a whole master install kit for about $120.

Bottom line: If someone is telling you more than $600 parts and labor....

/Agreed

I paid $275 or so for my 3.73 gears and everything I needed to have them installed. I found a good transmission and rear end shop that will put them in for $285.00.

The 2007 FRPP catalog lists the 3.73 gear and pinion set suggested retail price at $200. The install kit is priced at $40. If labor is $250-300, then a fair price would seem to be around $500-550. Also, the 4.10 gear set is listed a little higher at $260, with install kit $300.

My install had to get a new inner pinion bearing because the stock one was damaged upon removal. Looking at online driveline shops, this seems to be the norm. I'd recommend getting an install kit that atleast includes a new inner pinion bearing. All other bearings were reused on my car with 10k miles.

I no this is an old post, but i was looking for info on what gear oil to use and came across it.

Just the new inner pinion bearing from ford was $24! So that $40 install kit would be worth it.

i was quoted 650 at one place for everything completed, but they may come down because three of us are going there now. some other place tried to charge me 475 for the install with the install kit, but i had to bring the gears. that was a bit steep for an install. summit and jegs (i believe) and a couple other places have the 4.10's for around 220'ish. get 4.10's.
