Stupid question: Gear ratio

RE: Stupid question: Gear ratio
Aren't gears only worth .20 in the 1/4? The driveshaft is also worth .20.

I'm going to bet my gears willdestroy your driveshaft mod. Only my opinion. Also it's in my best opinion from what I read here that you will actually lose a few horsepower with gears.

ok sounds like theres too many drawbacks if I'm gonna keep the car forever.....
so how does the aluminum driveshaft help? less weight?

Less weight, but better yet, less rolational weight which is a parasite for power.

First of all, there is no such thing as a stupid question, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots. Just kidding. I couldn't help that.
With gears you will lose some highway MPG, and HP to the wheels. You will gain torque to the wheels and have quicker acceleration. If you do a lot of city driving, it will enable you to get to higher gears quicker and slightly increase your MPG. On the highway you will be doing higher RPM for the same speed. If you're doing burnouts now, it will make it easier to spin the tires. You probably have a 3.31 or 3.55 rear. If it's a 3.55, you won't notice much out of 3.73. That being the case, you also won't notice much MPG difference by going to 4.10 from 3.55.
Personally, I still can't decide between 3.73 and 4.10 as I do mostly highway driving of 500 miles one way every 2 weeks.

Where's the best and cheapest place to buy the Ford racing 4.10 gears? This shop said only get motorcraft gears.

I wouldnt say 700....500 is more like it. Gears for 140ish and 3-4 hours of labor.

with 4.10s you will loose 2 mpg at 75ish mph on long trips gears just multiply the torque to get u in the power band faster, like the old 10 speed bikes, 5th gear can be like 4.10s, 10th can be 3.31s
