Can you explain why CAI/tune quieted car?
Heres the story... I bought a CAI to louden the SLP Loudmouths more, because I love it like that.
I was running 87 tune + stock airbox. LOUD and wonderful.
Put on JLT CAI, with JLT canned tune. Much quieter...
Figured it might be the built-in predator tune, so I ordered a b@m@ tune... Still just as quiet.
As a test today I put on the stock airbox and the regular 87 performance tune and sure enough, vroom vroom beautiful sound.
Can anyone explain this and is there any way around this? I'm talking tune-wise, not by installing headers, x/h pipes etc. Is it just the tune causing this?? I want my mean loudness back.
It helps me compensate for other things.

A 87 Octane tune is just a name and number for a tune for that company. Don't really mean anything. the way most companies gain HP with a tune is by increasing the timing, The more you advance the timing the more octane you need to correct detonation. You can have a 87 tune from (lets say) -8 degrees to - 2 degrees, a 91 octane tune will be from -1 degree to + 2/3 degrees a 93 octane tune will be +4 to
+10 or so degrees. These numbers are not exact, just a example to explain. so a 87 octane tune with a -8 tune will be quieter than a 87 octane tune with a -2 degree tune, because of when the piston fires. and the power it makes.

Also what is the CAI intake tube made of ? Hard metal or composite plastic. That can make a difference in sound. I know the original is enclosed and made of hard plastic but just an idea!

My guess would be that what you are hearing isa normal result of advancing the timing. Advancing the timing will generally make an engine run smoother and have less of a "lopy" idle. I wouldn't think that many people could reallytell the difference. You must have a very discriminating ear.

You're prob running a little lean on the JLT tune. The stock tune is pretty rich, in the 11's or so. I noticed the same thing as you back when I got my first tune. I've used Steeda's, Evolution, Brenspeed and a custom tune and now, a custom tune with S/C. I've noticed the exhaust is deeper and louder the richer you run.Quieter the leaner you run. Ever notice your exhaust is a little deeper, and nastier on cold start and quiets down s the car warms? It's b/c the PCM runs the car rich on cold startup.

I thought mine got louder after i added my tune and intake but im not sure it could just all be in my head. the only difference in change was the x pipe it was louder but i different kind of loud it was more rumbly with the stock but with my headers it was a cleaner sound .
