No offense, but what does that mean? To me, it means look both ways before crossing a railroad tracks. Common sense could mean a conservative way of driving, something he doesn't want to do for a proper breakin. Safe driving....yes, but he needs to get the rpm's up to properly seat the rings.

+1
Especially if you intend to have your car for several years, manufacturing processes have improved a lot in the past 20 years so there is no need for a long break in period, however metals still need to go through several heat/cool down cycles (that is the reason factory recommends driving at different speeds for the first 1k miles), brake pads need to seat properly etc, etc
Now for break in period I mean driving at different speeds, brake progressively, use the gears as much as you can but shifting smoothly, rev up all the way to 6K if you want but don’t keep it there, don’t launch hard at every traffic light etc. 1K miles go by fast and will translate into a longer lasting engine.

I ran my GT super hard for the first 1000 miles, redlining daily about 10-20 times. Just vary the RPM a lot. As a result, all my cars I've done this with have had much higher than normal stock dyno numbers. All my friends wonder how I always get a "factory freak" and I tell em, it's just the break-in...by NO MEANS BABY IT, you lose power in the long run that way.

BTW, I leak zero oil (same level 5,000 miles after an oil change) and I get 20mpg city, more on the highway. And that's driving with a lead foot! Excellent hp/tq too :-)

My stock time at the track was 13.4...100% stock. That should tell you something.

I think its also good to give the engine some excess throttle in 4th gearon occasion during break-in to seat the rings...or, in the "old days" at least, this was the rule w/ a new engine. The way engines are manufactured these days, to such close tolerances, maybe that applies no longer, but I don't see that it would hurt either.....

Yea, what was the saying? "take it on the highway and blow the carbon out"

I just drove mine normally, didn't beat on it but I also didn't hesitate to take it to 5000rpm or so. I tried to avoid the highways, and when I couldn't I would stay at a same speed for more than a minute or so.
