How can the engine be damaged if you hit the rev limiter ?

And im a little bit confused: What i experienced yesterday was rev limiter ?

did the exhaust note change at all.... if so it most def was the limiter... goes a bit of blatt blatt blatt

When you hit the rev limiter, that is bad, you should look at your tachometer and shift prior to reaching 5000 rpms, in most cases I personally shift around 3000. Only when it is necessary to excellerate fast should you go into the higher RPMS. If it were not for the rev limiter you would probably be in need of a new engine/
