Looks like fun. I'd like to try that but my cars not set up for it. I did it once in a new C5 Vette when GM invited a bunch of prospects to test new car when they first came out.

I see your a newbie, welcome.

It is fun. If you haven't been around regular autocrossers (I suppose all autocrossers are irregular in some sense; I mean people who do autocross with some regularity) you'll be amazed at how much time and energy and money they invest in it, and how technical it gets. But unless you are a super-competitive person, it doesn't have to be expensive or technical to be fun.

Plus which, it lets you learn how your car will behave in extreme circumstances, and lets you learn what you can do with it. Car control is your friend.

I was going to say welcome to you as a newbie but then I see you joined the forum in Nov of 06 you just haven't posted much. Well welcome anyway.

I'm not super-competitive, I just like to see what my car will do. I enjoy speed and I like to drag at the dragstrip, not on the street, but I am getting this terrible afliction called Mod Fever that's getting quite expensive. I'm sure there is some autocrosse racing in Michigan but I don't know of any.

I agree with you on learning how your car will behave in extreme circumstances by pushing it.

Thank you for the welcome. I don't mind the "newbie" label. Everyone is a Newbie from time to time, if they are at all adventurous. I suppose it'll be a while before I cross whatever threshold removes one label and places another. I do prefer the forums that allow you to choose your own.

You have a beautiful car, which is an expression of competitiveness at some level, I think. But I have a similar attitude to yours: the real competition is between you and your goals. Doing the best you can with what you have is as rewarding as becoming a freak; I think that's what you have to do to be an Olympic athlete, for instance, or a champion auto racer. That's "freak" in a complimentary sense, but freak nevertheless.

I did autocross to the extreme for several years, very successfully with regard to my goals, and not that bad overall. Then went road racing with the SCCA and IMSA for a while. Then it became obvious that in order to progress farther I'd have to stop having so much fun at it and turn it into serious (freaky) work. No, thanks. I like fun more than that. I like the process almost as much as the product, and when the process isn't fun, I tend to fade out of the picture.

Any road, you can bet there is "Solo" racing in Michigan: Check out
http://www.wmr-scca.org/ and
http://www.scca.org/Solo/Solo2.asp?IdS=00F41D-5C07F60&x=050|030&~=
http://detroit-scca.org/e107/news.php
and you may find closer events than listed there. They have forums where questions are welcome, I'm certain. Just remember Solo II or Solo 2 is SCCA-speak for autocross and slalom events, Solo I or Solo One means high-speed racetrack work against a clock, rather than other cars and drivers trying to get there first.

Try it. You'll like it.

Autocrossing is a BLAST. I last did it about 3 or 4 years ago, in a Saturn SC2 (which actually handled the courses pretty good; the last time I did it, however, I was running on 3 cylinders and the car was running pretty poorly because of a fouled spark plug), and at some point I'm going to get into my GT and take it down...My dad wants me to wait until our Vette is built up with a 383 stroker and upgraded suspension & tires, but that'll put me into an entirely different class than a stock class. I need to just run and get used to a RWD vehicle again, put myself in as a novice in stock, if I can...
