DETROIT - Ford supplanted Toyota as the leader of the pack in initial quality rankings, taking the top spot in five of 19 segments in the 2007 survey by J.D. Power and Associates, released Wednesday.

Porsche again dominated the overall ranking of brands, averaging 91 problems per 100 vehicles as it had last year. That compared with a 2007 industry average of 125 problems per 100 vehicles. Last year it was 124.

Ford Motor Co. earned segment awards for the Ford Mustang, Lincoln Mark LT, Lincoln MKZ, Mercury Milan and Mazda MX-5 Miata. Mazda is 33.4 percent owned by Ford.

Toyota Motor Corp., which grabbed the top spot in 11 segments last year, captured only three this year, as did Mercedes-Benz. Toyota’s 2007 awards were for the 4Runner, Sequoia and Tacoma.

That actually suprises me because I've dealt with many Toyota suppliers and Toyota has very strict quality standards. Most plants have had to do extensive revamping of their QC department when they add Toyota to their customer list as opposed to supplying for the Big 3. Great for Ford, this may be a boost to their sagging sales.

Gim'me a break. Who honestly believes that Ford makes a higher quality vehicle than Toyota? Other than Ford employees and the UAW that is?

Be honest with yourself. Ford won't even own up to the fact the SN197 leaks water into the passenger compartment.

If you read the article, it talks about some specific cars in their segments.. yes, most cars have some production problems, and you hear about those problems... what you dont' hear about is the thousands of cars that people have no problems with. Maybe we should start a post that says "I didn't have any problems with my car!" But also realize that Toyota's quality has slipped a lil bit in the years that they've been vamping up production...
