Default Getting a Custom Tune, do i need to buy a tuner?

I'm trying to have a custom tune done on my mustang after having a whipple installed. Currently the default FRPP whipple tune is installed but I heard custom is better. Anyway, I'm currently scheduled to get it tuned from a reputable shop here, but they are telling me I need to purchase a $399 predator tuner and they will custom tune it, which will be another couple hours at $179 per hour. Is this normal? When you guys get your car custom tuned, do you have your own tuner, does the shop you take it to have all sorts of tuners that work with all cars? I suppose I don't mind buying a tuner, but would I ever used it again... it just seems like i'm wasting $400 on something that will be used once. Like why can't the shop just use the tuner and keep it... i don't really want it.

You need the tuner to upload the data into your cars ECU. Trust me when things go wrong (Not saying they are going to but sometimes do) you will need the tuner. Also if you need to put in a valet mode if someone else is driving it (valet) and to have diff tunes such as a track only tune or DD tune. Its a worthy investment. Oh yeah they cant install the S/c without so its not an option.

Also i forgot to add tuners are for one car only use, so a shop can't but a tuner and tune everyones car with it.

Ok, thanks for the info. That makes me feel better at least then. Also, what would the valet tune be for? Basically I want my tune to be good for street use... I would imagine a valet person should be able to drive the tune I would have, no?

Maybe it's okayif you want the valet (or whoever) to be out hitting your boost

179 an hour to tune the car is pretty expensive in my book. I can get 3 dyno tunes for 200 and several dyno runs also for that matter...probably 3-4 hours of work
