Default 4.6L Takes More Than 6 Quarts?

Changed the oil today for the first time with 856 miles on the clock. When I put 6 quarts of Motorcraft 5W-20 in, the dipstick read about a 1/2 quart down. When I poured the old oil back in to the containers the new oil came from, I found that about 6 and 1/2 quarts came out. Have you noticed this yourself or did I just let the car drain longer than they think we should / would?

6-6.25 QTS is usually average.

I only put in 6 quarts. You don't want to put in too much. As long as it's in between the lines it will be fine.

Well maybe someone should go check the manual. I have always put in more than 6 quarts (about .25-.50 quarts) and everything checks out fine on the dipstick.

yeah no crap i just went up to walmart to get my mobil 1 synthetic oil change....and they definately charged me for 7 quarts, they said it took 6.5 to fill it up to the level, and they put the extra half quart in the bottle and put it in the seat with a plastic sack around it.....guess it takes more than 6....probably like 6.25 like it was previously stated ^

Always remember to count for the filter when putting in oil...

There is no set amount according to the owners manual and you don't need to get it all the way up to the line on the dipstick. Anywhere between the two holes in acceptable. The owners manual clearly states that if the oil level is between the lower and upper holes on the dipstick, the oil level is acceptable. It then boldly says DO NOT ADD OIL. I wonder how many of you are over filling your engines.

Manual states 6 quarts, INCLUDING filter change. To the point made above remember that the hatched area on the dipstick does not go all the way from the bottom hole to the top hole. Hatched area stops midway between the two holes in the dipstick....

What page is that on? EDIT: found it on page 226. I couldn't find it anywhere on page 198. If you're up to the upper hole, then you have put in too much oil IMO. I just checked my oil and it's at the top of the hatched area and I only use 6 quarts of mobile 1 5w20.

As for Walmart, of course they are going to open that 7th quart. That's another $5 in their pocket. There's only a few things i'll get a walmart and an oil change ain't one of them.
