Great discussion.
How do side louvers and rear louvers affect the ability to detect? What about tint?
If you guys get pulled over with a detector do you take it down, or let in plain view of the officer?

RE: Radar detecor
lemme start off by saying this. I honestly would not waste your money on a radar detector. Most agencies today use either Lidar or KA band guns. Some still use K and im sure there are some very small departments or county agencies which still utilize X band. All bands except Lidar can be used while moving, yes they can pick up cars going away and coming towards. Lidar/Laser as some know it the squadcar must be sitting still and then still cannot shoot properly through glass. Yes when you see and Officer sitting on the side of the road and is outside the car or has the car slanted sideways shooting out on open window this is what they are using.
All guns I have seen either, K, KA, Lidar or Laser has a trigger switch much like a handgun. They do no transmit unless this is pulled. So with this feature radar detectors are pretty much useless if you are the car that is being target. The gun will have your speed prior to your radar det even going off.
I will tell you my preferred gun to use at work is a LIDAR one. You can hit cars from a longer distance, and can select which car you are wanting and every other car is not effected. The beam on the lidar is approximately 1 foot wide at 900 feet.
When I stop cars which have an expensive detector I will usually ask them if it worked. I can rememver for sure a few escorts 8500s' and one or two V1's. All of which claimed they didnt even go off. I had one of the guys with the 8500 ask me if I wanted it because he said it obviously didnt work. Now all of these were using Lidar.
I think my whole point in this post is. If the officer is sitting on the side of the road using constant on, only an option on the X,K,KA bands your detectors might work. If the Officer is using instant on function, your caught by the time you hear the beep. The other thing to keep in mind is to pay attention. Im not sure about other states, but crown vics speedos are certified calibrated. You might say what does that mean. It means we can write tickets from pacing you. So please dont be the person who I pull behind at 115 on the highway that doesnt have a clue a squad is on their rear bumper.
Be safe out there guys and gals.

The Blinder system is a pretty safe bet for LIDAR protection. That's going to be one of my next purchases. I don't drive fast, but moving at the speed of traffic is enough to get you lit up. Being 22, I don't think that a few points would go too well with the insurance.
Better safe than sorry.

RE: Radar detecor
I have a Bel STI Driver. Works great and came with a lot of things.
But just because you are getting blown doesn't mean your car is going to be faster when it comes to your speed. It just means that you are going to get up to that speed faster.
My point being, if you want a radar detector just get one, not because you are getting blown.

Great discussion.
How do side louvers and rear louvers affect the ability to detect? What about tint?
If you guys get pulled over with a detector do you take it down, or let in plain view of the officer?

My wife is a Middle School Principal and frequently has to work with the local cops with kids. She was coming out of the school one night and the Asst. Police Chief drove up to her. He got out and they were chewing the fat and he was getting a woody over the new GT. Another cop drove by and he called him on the radio to come over and look at it. They were walking around and asked to see the engine. She popped the hood and they freaked. They saw the Cobra and asked what that was for? She said she only drives about 3-5 mph over the speed limit and uses it to make sure she is at speed limit when a cop is around because the GT draws attention from cops and wants to make damn sure she is legal with the speed. They were good with that, and told here to burn them off when she left. She smiled and declined but said she would run them some time if they set up a course on a deserted and blocked off road. They jumped on that and said deal!!!! Drive safe on the way home.

RE: Radar detecor
go with something by beltronics!! I joined a forum before I bought my most recent radar just to be sure I was getting a good one!! After studying it and not wanting to spend a fortune it appeared that beltronics offer the best performance for the money. So if your looking for value and are comfortable with spending about 150$ (not much more than your avg whistler or cobra) than go for a bell. But whatever you do avoid cobras at all costs. I was a diehard cobra fan untill i joined the forum which is www.radardetector.net apparantly they're overpriced paper weights. LOL, go join the forum is extremly informative!!
