Oil pressure gauge installed but a few ?'s
Ok so i just finished installing my Autometer NV Full sweep electric gauge. It looks great but it seems it may not be working properly. When im idling the arrow on the guage seems to "flicker" and "jiggle" up and down. I'm not sure of what word to use. And when i rev it it seems to not be smooth but kind of jerky. Is this typical of this type of gauge? or is there something wrong. I installed the sender where the stock sender used to be. Also, my oil pressure at idle is about 30 and at 2,000 rps it goes to about 60-65ish. Does this seem right? Thanks for the help!

RE: Oil pressure gauge installed but a few ?'s
not sure what's happening exactly....
i've read somewhere that sometimes the sender needs
to be remotely mounted, to isolate it from the engine
vibrations.
i'm not sure if this is what's happening here, but is worth
noting for future reference

a better word to describe it would probably be "jumpy" the needle moves a tiny amount up and down. Also, i accidently dropped the sender while trying to install it. Do you think it is fragile enough to be damaged?

You can call or e-mail Autometer. I find their costumer service to be good.
I installed mine back in April, if you use the search feature you can find the write up. Your oil pressure sounds like it's reading correctly. Cold start is about 75 psi, as the engine warms it goes a bit over 30 psi. Cruising at highway speed is generally 60 psi.
There shouldn't be any jumpiness. It should smoothly increase and decrease with engine RPM and be constant at idle. Obviously, the faster you accelerate the faster pressure will build. However, I do have a short sweep gauge, so this theoretically wouldn't be as accurate, maybe I don't see the little changes you could?
I would check the electrical connections first using a voltmeter. The wire powering the gauge should read 12V under all conitions, voltage from the sender will vary with oil pressure.
I mounted mine with a brass T directly to the block, that way, I could keep the stock sender functional. As far as remote mounting, Autometer says to remote mount it if it will be exposed to excessive vibration, as in an engine capable of high RPM or a race car.
The 4.6 doesn't really fit into any of these categories, especially not high RPM's, there are some Japanese engine that can hit 9,000 RPM.
I e-mailed Autometer about it and they told me if it's not leaking, then not to move it. It's been about 1,500 miles since with no leaks or any problems.
