Rust on rear axle and elsewhere in So. Cal?
I was looking at my new GT yesterday, and noticed that there are significant amounts of rust on the rear axle. The rear suspension pieces on either side that hold the axle in place are also almost completely rusted (sorry, I don't know what these parts are called to be more decriptive). I live in southern California, so I have no idea why everything is so rusty. It was manufactured in January, so I almost have to wonder if it was sitting in the snow or something before it came here.
Is this normal? If not, should I demand that the $tealership replace these parts? Combined with the manual transmission clunk, I'm almost starting to regret buying an American car, as I have only otherwise had trouble-free Acura's and a Toyota...

It's normal. Its just bare metal. If you look under your dash at any untreated metal it will also show rust color. As long as it's not pitted it's fine.

Yeah, it does bother me. I don't know why Ford is so cheap; it could not be that costly to dip the metal in a rust-preventative coating; none of my other cars have had rust on suspension/drive components like this.
Maybe I'll try that Por15 stuff. Thanks for the suggestion.

No problem, it's good stuff but breaks down with UV light so it's really only best under the car unless you coat it. A lot of offroaders use it because it cleans up the axles nice, stops and prevents rust, and can be applied directly over what is there now, pretty much no cleaning needed.
Downside is it's expensive ... and don't get it on your skin, it doesn't like to come off

Yea, it bothers me as well. Lots of suspension parts are bare metal including the prop shaft. [:@] I'm a WD40 man. Every time i look under the car I must empty a whole can on it LOL

Mine has never been driven in rain, but still shows light surface rust at the places you're talking about.
That slight driveline clunk is inherent to the 2-pc driveshaft design, not an issue with your car specifically.
btw, I have a Toyota as my DD, but the Mustang is 1000% more fun to drive! [8D]
