Default differential oil change

Has anyone used a pump to suck out the old oil? I'm trying to avoid taking the differential cover off, but I want to make sure I can get practically all of the old oil out with a tube. Not worried about metal shavings because the oil was changed recently. Now I'm putting in Royal Purple.

Pull the cover.
Get a new gasket at the same time.

You need to pull the cover, not an option. The fluid is very thick and slimy and sits on the walls and gears, and there is no way a pump will get all of it. Pull the cover, wipe everything clean (theres a lot left over in various nooks and crannies). Put silicone on the old cover or a new gasket (I just used silicone as it was right at the local parts store).

You may better off buying an axle girdle for $150-$200 to replace the cover with. These have a drain plug, give better cooling, and hold the bearing caps in place for extra protection. If you buy one then make sure you get one for the 05-07 mustang as any 8.8" axle girdle WILL NOT work due to our panhard bar getting in the way. (Im assuming you have a GT with an 8.8) Decide on this BEFORE you change your fluid otherwise you'll be buying the expensive fluid twice.

Most fluids work great in our differentials, with limited slip additive added. I've used Mobil 1 75-140 with great success, and amsoil. Many like Redline's 75-140 or even Redline's ShockProof gear oil. Not sure if I trust shockproof since its pretty hardcore and my car is pretty stock powered besides the obvious mods.

Anyways have fun!

I have used a suction gun to pull my fluid out before. Thats not the "right" way to do it, but when I refilled with 2qts., it was full, so I must have got a good amount of it out. The only reson I did that because I did not have a whole lot of time, and I would have to worry about it leaking.

If you were only able to get 2 quarts back in you left approx. half a quart in there. I just did this as part of a rear change and it took 2.5 liters. Almost exactly the same as 2.5 quarts.

Sounds like you left about a half quart in there. Soundl like sucking the old oil is not going to suffice. Is there any way to get the cover off without lifting the panhard bar out of the way? I was going to use the axle as my lift points, and I can't undo the left side of the panhard bar with weight on the axle can I?

Like I said above you must remove the cover. Theres a few "sunken" places at the bottom that a suction tube won't reach. Also, the fluid is so thick that it doesn't run off the walls and gears. It needs to be wiped off.

Do it right if this is your first time. There will be sparkly metal shavings and junk like that in there from the initial breakin.
