X pipe and resonator help
Hey guys,
Just put on a Pypes O/R X pipe and with my SLP loudmouths it is rediculously loud and it has a horrible trumpeting sound at around 2k rpm.
Looked into resonators.
Found 2 that could work
1) Flowtech Red Hots Glasspacks
have a louvered inner tube that diverts flow and sound into the fiberglass surround
18" tube total 24" length
2) Dynomax Thrush glasspacks
have a perforated inner tube
20" tube total 28" length
Looked some more and found someone saying that the louvered glasspacks reduce flow by 66% and that the perforated glasspacks only 20-30%
My question to you exhaust and physics gurus is this:
The supposed gain of 10whp from removing the cats (removing a restriction of flow), will it be negated by adding the louvered glasspack only or either one?
Does anyone know the % flow that was gained by removing the cats? I would hate to spend all this money to gain power and then have to loose it all to lower the volume and eliminate the trumpeting sound.

RE: X pipe and resonator help
The stock cats really don't reduce any flow. The best part about removing them is the 70 lb weight reduction. Try putting your your stock muffs back on, that will quiet it down, but it will still be loud. There is no real restriction in the stock muffs either. I bought some 12" racing muffs from Summit Racing, Along with the stock muffs, I'm hoping they will tone down the X-pipe gurgle/trumpet sound.

Thanks,
I'm thinking about ditching the SLP LM and trying to find resonators for the new Pypes mid muffler system. It uses bullet race mufflers that only reduce flow by 5% over a section of straight pipe.
In the mean time I have put the stock mufflers back on and its much quieter and no trumpeting.

Ok, update..... I installed the two 12" glasspack racing muffs today, they definately took the edge off thetrumpet and toned down the higher pitched noises. I was hoping they would be a little quieter than they are, but it's much better for sure. I think I can live with it for now.

RE: X pipe and resonator help
Thanks Jerjan,
I was looking at various glasspacks and found so 18" FlowTech Red Hots and some 20" Dynomax Trush glasspacks. Don't know what I am going to do right now, as I have heard that glasspacks with a louvered inner tube (Red Hots) can reduce exhaust flow considerably, making me think twice.
I took off the SLP LM and have the stock muffs back on which will keep me out of trouble for now.
Kindaat a crossroads right now. Do I try the resonators and risk not elimiating the trumpeting and it still running too loud, or do I sell the SLP LM and try a different axle back or maybe even sell the O/R X pipe for a catted one.
Any thoughts?
