I have experienced a tune, and I am stock. I did not try this tune on MY car, but I've ridden in another mustang with the CAI/tune. My reason? Well I have two:

1) a tune voids your warranty. It also bumps HP, which causes more wear/tear on the engine internals, albeit only slightly. I will not do a tune until after 100,000 miles for this reason.

2) I have a 5spd. The tune makes a lot less of a difference on a manual vs. an automatic. Yeah the difference is still very noticeable, but it's not necessary on a manual to enjoy the car. I prefer to be 100% stock, with stock tune...and my car is great as it is.

So, yeah, when the warranty is up on my car, I'll put a tune on, but until then, don't want to void the warranty and my car has little/no throttle lag due to the fact it's a manual. In fact, I think my car is more responsive than some of the mustangs WITH the cai/tune. So in my mind, I don't need a tune right now, and am enjoying my car as-is with my warranty still intact :-)

I'm curious to hear the response to this.

It is honestly very weird that everyone loves that combo so much. I know a guy who has been running a performance shop for 20-30 years and he works on Audis, Lambos, Ferraris, Porsches, etc. and he swears up and down that CAIs are garbage, they do little to nothing or in some cars can even cause problems.

He actually does his own chipping/tuning and he has said that a good tune makes a big difference but combo'ing it up with a CAI is just plain useless.

Myself? I have no opinion because I havn't tried one and I don't know enough about cars. I do know that a CAI can't possibly bring in that much more air than stock. Also, under the hood gets hot, so it's not even like you are really intaking "cold air". Let me see a Cold-Air Intake that intakes chemically-chilled air or something like that... now that could make a difference.

Has anyone ever dyno'd to see if made a difference? Before, After with tune, After with tune and CAI?
Well I have an opinion and I think your expert mechanic is all wrong or he was just making conversation with you. I have a Granatelli CAI that does not need a tune and when I put it in the improvement in performance was significant. I have since gotten a tune with the same CAI and it has improved the performance another significant amount.

The stock air box and tube are very restrictive and its very obvious just by looking at them. You are wrong and your mechanic is wrong and he is just uninformed. Find a new mechanic.

1) I have brought my car for service, with plenty of Mods, The Mods do not nesasarily void the warranty, ONLY if the aftermarket part causes the failure of another part, I have a Huge CAI w tune, i was never questioned when it was clear my car is Moded....I actually got my Stock upper strut mounts replaced with Full aftermarket suspension pieces, though difficult if you know the law and read the Magnussom Moss Act you can achieve this as well...

2) Bumping HP another 20-30 with a CAI and Tune will no way shape or form if done right will hurt these motors, the internals of these 3V can support 500 + HP easily..

3) I respect your decision to stay stock and if thats good for you fine....As for as a tune not making a difference on a Manuel your Clearly Wrong.....its night and day...My car Woke up....

If your gonna make judgements...... Please have some facts before you make some of your claims.. Because IMO they are not true..

I thought I had mistakenly popped a handfull of Viagra when I drove my car the first time after installing my CAI/Tune. I could't imagine going back, but my car is not a daily driver.

I’m running a stock intake with a brenspeed 93 octane config using their Xcal 2 programmer. It makes big difference in performance and driveability. I didn’t go with the CAI because I couldn’t find one I liked and the air intake temp is no different than stock.

I would never consider going back to stock. Having that extra HP is what saves me from getting beat some times. The only thing I wish is that the CAI made the engine louder. Its still pretty quite to me. My last car you could here me coming home from a block away, it was nice.

it might be because your stang is an 06, and the other stang an 07.
07's are heavier.

EDIT: and to everyone who says "stock temp and CAI temp are the same, blah blah" these filters aren't really CAI, they're MAF. It's the extra air flow in the design, NOT the colder charge that give you the HP gains.

No, it doesn't. Despite the fact that many people throw the word "void" around quite a bit, it's just misinformation that any mod actually voids the warranty. If the mod is the direct cause of a failure, the warranty will not cover the failure, but otherwise the warranty is still intact. If a dealer tells you otherwise, they are lying and are likely in violation of Magnuson-Moss.
