Sounds like a blast! But I’m glad it was your Mustang. I can’t imagine you will ever be able to get all the salt out. Have you ever seen a car from Iowa? Not a pretty sight! When you put water on it to wash it off it just dilutes the salt so it flows better into small spaces.

So was it anything like in The World's Fastest Indian? How was the crowd? I heard the weather can get pretty gnarly out there, with heat and high winds.

It's funny, out of 10 people I show that pic to 8 of them mention the gas thing. In actuality I had it set to read out MPG. I wanted to see what it would read at top speed. I had made several passes and had taken the shots with my camera 'blind' so I did not realize it had gone under 50 miles remaining and onto the warning read out.

As far as the other comments about the salt....one trip down the salt flats isn't gonna rust a car out. You undercoat it first and then I took it to a car wash that had an undercarriage wash and gave the owner a few bucks to just let me roll back and forth over it. I then took it home and put it up on stands and pressure washed the undercarriage. No much to worry about. It is not like driving all winter in the salt.

When you go out to the salt flats you drive out on this road that just ends at a sign. You then just drive out on the salt. There is no fence or gate or anything. We went out about 10 miles and found a lane about 5 miles long that was marked with orange cones. We just kept the cones about 100 yards off to the side and drove back and forth. I let my 14 year old son just have the time of his life. He went over 100 a couple of times. It was a great father-son day. Other than a guy with a real elaborate photo setup shooting some foreign car we were the only ones out on the salt that day.

Does anyone else wonder how scary it would be to try driving at 150 AND hold a camera to take a picture??

How stable does the car track at that speed? In my mind I always think driving on salt would tend to feel slippery (not that I would know). So how did it feel?
