Studs vs Winter tires

I ran studs ALL winter last year and for me, there is NO other option. Studs are good for ice and hard pack snow. You can actually drive the speed limit on those conditions and feel safe doing so as long as the other folks don't hit you. They don't reduce your stopping distance that much on dry pavement unless you lock them up which you can't do because of the ABS so no worries there. They do sound like you are running over broken glass though on the hard. Something you get used to. Next to chains, there is no safer way to go on ice and hard packed roads.

Where can you get Tires with Studs? I think they are illeage here in Delaware. I haven't seen then since the 1970's.

I get mine from a local gas station that has a semi trailer parked out back full of them. They are snow tires that are studable. Charges $5 a tire to shoot studs in em. They aren't name brand tires.

If wanted I can get em just down the street at les schwab, but they are only legal during winter months we are required to have them off by end of march I believe. Not sure what I'll do maybe just not drive it in the snow but thats an option not everyone has. We do get ice here(Portland, Or.)but snow only comes once or twice a year. If I go with an SC like Ive been thinking then I'd probably do studs and winter tires like mentioned above and change back & forth.

RE: Studs vs Winter tires
Thanks for all the good replies. Here in Wyoming studs are perfectly legal! I am inclined to go with the purpose-built snow tires like the Blizzaks. I know that they don't last very long, but they would only be on the car for a few months at a time. So longevity is not a problem. Most of the driving will be on city streets, but there will also be highway miles too. I do think that the stopping distances will be compromised, because without the TCS, you do not have ABS either. So a lockup is a possibility. Studs do offer superior traction, however they can be prone to dislodging from the tire at high speeds (highway). Sandbags are probably an excellent idea to.

I thought all of us had ABS. I have never lost a stud. Those things are pretty long and get shot in with a nail gun type device. The thicker barrel of the stud stays put and just the 1/8 inch wide carbide stud wears down with the tread.
