Bump guards on the door?

Bump guards on the door?
I have noticed that a lot the cars do not have the guards that go down the side of the door. Mine does and I think it looks better without them.Anyone know how they are put on? Do they leave holes or marks if taken off? I would like to get mine off. Thanks for any comments or suggestions.
Oh well, any feedback would be aprreciated.

This has been discussed at length.
No holes, just tape.
Heat and goo-gone and patience gets them off with
no trace of them being there. Unless your paint is
new and unfaded and then you will see virgin unfaded
paint where they were.[:@]
