Actually - the reason I want to remove wax is because I am installing a Roush hood sccop. I would just use the Dawn on the area where the scoop would go? Full strenght or diluted?

Using Dawn on occasion to simply remove wax buildup is fine. However you need to remember that when people see this type of things in a forum there are some who will use it all the time to wash there car. That's why i try not to suggest it in a forum. People see and read what they want sometimes.

A few of the local pinstripers around here I've seen prep the car with rubbing alcohol on a rag, so I guess that works too.

It leaves trace amounts of residue.
I got some on my taillights lenses
when cleaning for trim pieces applied
with 3M VHB tape and luckily I was
careful to just apply it between the lamps
where the trim pieces were to go. My lenses
promptly turned milky white where it was
applied as it dried. Nothing in the instructions
about this. If I had not used a Q-Tip and been
careful, and instead used the alcohol prep pad
they sent, I would have milky white taillights.[:@]
Dont recommend rubbing alcohol for removing wax.
Could discolor plastic trim parts.

I've used Dawn as well. But the clay will remove the old wax too. Both should give you good insurance that the old wax is removed. I'd be careful how much Dawn you use. Too much soap and you'll have to do a really good job of rinsing your car to ensure there is no soap film. Still, you'll have to rinse your car after the claying so you'll get it pretty clean then.
Polish, apply decals, then wax as necessary.

My brother in law used dish soap every time he washed his probe. Not that i agree with it, but his car looked brand new until the day he sold it 8 years later.
Its not gonna hurt, especially one time.

RE: removing old wax
I've got one better. One of my partners had a patient with very little money. He never charged him for office visits, but the guy insisted he wash his car for him in return. He let him wash his car for years!..and everytime he washed it, we couldn't believe the shine. It almost looked wet all the time and whenever my partner washed it himself, he never got it to come out as good. He finally got the guy to tell him his secret. He was adding someKEROSENE to the wash water! If I didn't see the shine myself I never would have believed it. To this day we don't know if he was trying to get the best shine or trying to kill him.
