My older brother was racing in Rally cars in Europe.
Since I was too young to get a car but old enough (16 yrs old) to have a motorcycle. I went to race those. Road course and motocross (pre arena stuff). On 4 wheels, I raced dune buggys for a while. Road racing was just too expensive, even with local sponsors.
That was it.
Never thought I'd move to the US but I don't look back now, since I'm a V8 kind of guy.
The Bullit and the original Gone in 60 seconds movies did it for me. Also Starsky and Hutch seriesdisplayed some good V8 noise.

For me, it was watching WRC on TV. Here's guys throwing their cars around twisting mountain roads in controlled slides as fast as possible in snowy/icy conditions, on dirt roads, asphalt, gravel, etc, and doing it at what seemed like inhuman speeds!
That made me want to learn to race my car, albeit in autocross, since I wasn't quite willing to subject my car to the abuse of off-road rallying...

Two movies stand out as being responsible for desires of automobile mayhem and undiluted fun.
Gumball Rally and Smokey and the Bandit series. Granted the last two of S&B sucked as much as F&F, but the car stuff was good.
