I can get some used gears for pretty cheap, about 50% off new ones, so should I jump at the opportunity or not?

I don't think that's a very good idea, it's not like new gears are all that expensive to begin with. And, the used gears may have been installed improperly, causing them to have a bad wear pattern, that could give you a problem.

Bad idea. The slight cost savings are not worth the risk. If you know the person and know the car they came from, then maybe. But I still would just get new ones.

You should never buy used gears, period.

Bad Idea, The cost of brand new gears are not high enough to want to take a risk with used gears. If they don't work out the labor cost of changing them again would be more than a couple of sets of new gears.
