What is the widest tire I could safely put on a 18x8.5 inch rim? I have 255/45 right now in the back and I was wondering if I could safely fit 275/45 on the back.

I am running 255/45/18's on my X.W's. That is the widest tire that is recommended on those rims. I know plenty of guys that step up to 275's, so it can be done, but the pros don't recommend it.

On my factory 17 Aluminum I have 265's all the way around Falkens FK451' and FK452now. I have no suspetion upgrade so they look like crap... because of the low side wall. As far as handling you can't get better tiers for the money...

Like dseid2 said, they will fit, but they are not recommended. But if I get Nitto 555s I'm going for the 275s, but if I get BFG KDW2s I'll be going 265s. The Nittos are known to fit a slightly smaller wheels with each of their sizes, don't ask me why though lol.

Folk do fit larger than recommended tires to the rims but the handling starts to suffer the more "over" you go due to side wall flex, so i wouldn't recommend it. I was caught in a hole sometime years back far from home and needed to buy a pair of reartires in a hurry. I could ONLY get 245 tires instead of the recommended 225 and so had to have 'em. I think they lasted 2 weks until I got home and took them off, it made the car handle terribly, seriously bad.

Waw... I have 265/40/17 all they way around and the car handles like have a suspentoin upgrade... maybe it's the type of tiers.. you know Falkens FK 452

275/45 will fit ok... the issue is they are hard to find and very pricey in that size. 275/40 are easier to find. I have 265/40(DRs) now on mine the fit well and I've had no issues other than that they were discontined.

Are the polished ALUs 18 x 8.5?
The weird thing is I read on a couple ford parts website that the polished were 8" wide and the same bullitts in chrome were 8.5" wide.
I was scratching my head on that one, it had to be a typo.
