Pros/Cons of Downshifting to a stop light

I'm just curious because the way I learned to slow down to a STOP, was to downshift along with rev matching. I always downshift to 3rd and 2nd and rev match to smoothen it. I dont do 1st at all on the stang but i do SOMETIMES on my focus, I guess it depends on the car/tranny. I do it, to save my brakes, and to also stop faster, but what are the pros/cons.

My other question is, when downshifting/engine breaking, do i waste more gas?

Replacing brake pads is a hell of a lot cheaper than replacing a clutch.

If you rev match, do it properly. Either you are heel/toeing, or double clutching......just don't be revvin' the engine with the clutch in.

Ha! I do this, but only with my friends in the car.
Oh, vanity.

Bad idea to downshift... Its stresses the clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing, other clutch items, gives the engine extra RPMS, and stresses the tranny. Is it bad stress? Not at all, but when you multipy one downshift by 60 times a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, you're look at almost 22,000 more shifts per year. Ouch.

Yes you waste more gas because more RPMs means more gas, as opposed to a neutral coast.

Brakes, on the other hand, can be replaced for $30 and a spare hour in the garage.

Just go into neutral.

Seems the only time I down shift is on the highway off ramp.
