Default The Truth about Mustangs and Snow

OK, I'm sick and tired of all these BS threads of "oh the Mustang isn't bad in snow, just drive slowly." The people that are saying that must either 1. live in Miami, FL or 2. only drive on plowed streets. I don't know what these people are smoking.

From my experience, with the stock tires and a V8 GT 5spd, the Mustang is TERRIBLE on unplowed streets. So bad, you are likely to get stuck if there is any more than 1" of snow on the ground and the street is flat and straight. I don't care which gear you start in, how slow you go, TCS on/off, the car is terrible. I almost got stuck the other day in a flat parking lot with 1" of unplowed snow. Any more than that, and good luck...you're stuck. And forget going up unplowed hills.

BOTTOM LINE: The Mustang (V-6, V-8, stick, automatic, whatever) sucks on snow. Snow tires DO help a lot, and so does weight in the back, but if you have 2"+ of snow on unplowed streets, you are stuck. You will NOT be able to drive no matter what. And 6" of unplowed snow? You won't be able to move.

So, while the Mustang is fine in Winter with snow tires as long as you stay on plowed streets, it is NOT fine when the streets are unplowed with more than an inch or two of snow. Yes, snow tires will help a LOT and so will weight in the back, but this car is useless on unplowed snowy streets.

EDIT: read my post below, #11. I am NOT whining about this car's performance in the snow/ice, I am complaining about all the n00bs who say this car is great in the snow/ice if you just drive carefully/get snow tires/put weight in the back. They make it out like this car handles like a Jeep, when in fact this car sucks *** on unplowed roads with more than 1" of snow/ice.

buy a honda civic beater for like 500 bucks and get over it. Mustangs should never touch snow and salt imo.

..... as are most RWD cars. I don't think the Mustang is any worse than any other RWD car. The reason most people point and say the mustang is bad is because most other rides are FWD these days which are better in Snow.

Tires and the driver make up for a lot - but a RWD muscle car is obviously not a good choice for the snow.
I had performance tires on my last car - an SRT-4. I got caught in some snow in Kentucky when I was there for Christmas. Even though it was FWD, I would take my Mustang (with the stock tires) any day over that. It was just one long (semi) controlled slide back to plowed roads. That was an experience I don't want to relive...
My first car, on the other hand, was a 1985 Olds Delta 88 - with a 5.0L V8. That thing was great in the snow!

Boo hoo. I don't seem to have probems.. I've always driven rear wheel drive cars/trucks.. no matter what the weather.. However.. I have not driven a GT.. with all that torque.. I'm sure it is hard.

I know people that drive faster cars all year though.. and they don't seem to have problems. Sure you slip.. but any car will slip depending on how you drive it.

Last year was my first year witht he Mustang.. and I drove home from work after we had freezing rain for about 3 hours.. that changed to snow...about 4 inches of snow by the time I had to drive home. I just took it easy and was fine.. even had to wait at a stoplight that was on a hill [:@]. Didn't have weight in the back either.

If your that concerned.. carpool, take the bus.. or buy a beater.

You got stuck in 2" of snow? That's damn funny. It took 9" to stick me. After 40", I bought chains.

I dunno'... Maybe it's because I'm from the Midwest and just used to snow. But don't you just kinda' expect a rear wheel drive car to suck in the snow and either learn to deal with it or decide not to drive it in the winter. I mean... Is anyone surprised by this?

I live in Wisconsin and have a 5sp GT and would agree, it is not fun to drive in the snow, mine has been in the garage since November 15th. However I would disagree about the V6 Auto, I had one one for the past 2 winters with traction control, and I never got stuck, nor did I have any problems with traction. In fact on a couple of occasions I tried to get it to go sideways in the snow and TCS kicked and straightend me right out.

Listen guys, I think some of you are misinterpreting what I'm saying as whining about this car's performance in the snow.

Look, I knew when I bought it it would SUCK in snow/ice. I have no problem with that. What I DO have a problem with are all the people saying "it's not that bad on snow, it's great in the Winter, just go slow/get snow tires and it's like a Jeep!" PLEASE! That is what pisses me off.

I know this car is a muscle car with RWD and a V-8, so I'm not expecting it to be good at ALL in the snow. I just hate hearing all the threads of people saying it's not that bad.
